Draft State in Canvas

July 11th, 2014 IMG Posted in Canvas Comments Off on Draft State in Canvas

Starting over the weekend, Draft State will be turned on by default for all Canvas courses. Draft State allows you to publish certain elements of course when you’re ready. You’ll have more control over your assignments, pages, discussions, quizzes, and modules. For example, if you want to create a module but prevent students from accessing it, you can leave it unpublished (in a draft state) until you are ready to release it to students.

This page has more information, screen shots, and links to the Canvas Course Guides for  more information: http://auburn.edu/img/canvas/help/teachers/f_draft_state/index.html

Contact IMG if you have questions or come by and let us show you how it works.

Direct Links to Panopto Videos in Canvas

May 16th, 2014 IMG Posted in Canvas, Panopto Comments Off on Direct Links to Panopto Videos in Canvas

When clicking a link in Canvas to a specific video in Panopto:

Students MUST click the Panopto Recordings link and click through to the Panopto folder before any direct link to a specific video will work. If they do not: they will be asked to log in to Panopto.

Clicking the Panopto Recordings button and clicking through to Panopto passes the users’ credentials needed for access; clicking a direct link to a video does not.

Note: Links to public Panopto recordings are not affected as credentials aren’t required to view them.

Panopto and Internet Explorer Bug

May 16th, 2014 IMG Posted in Canvas, Panopto Comments Off on Panopto and Internet Explorer Bug

We have discovered a problem when trying to access Panopto through the link in Canvas: you or your students encounter the Panopto log in page.

This is a browser issue, and Internet Explorer is the only browser we’re seeing it in. We are working with Panopto to try to address the issue, but here is the fix for now:

  1. Make sure the computer is up to date; make sure IE is up to date.
  2. Clear the browser cache
  3. Change this setting in IE:
    1. Click Internet Options
    2. Privacy Tab
    3. Sites
    4. Add auburn.edu
    5. Allow

The easier solution to the problem might be to use a different browser – accessing Panopto through Canvas in Firefox and Chrome works fine.

Panopto Updated to 4.6

May 12th, 2014 IMG Posted in Canvas, Panopto Comments Off on Panopto Updated to 4.6

Please see below for some major changes to Panopto:

  • On Friday, May 9, Panopto was upgraded to version 4.6, a version with some major changes. Details can be found here on their website: http://panopto.com/blog/panopto-4-6/ , but the two main changes you’ll notice are
  • A new user interface – much more viewing space and a clean, new layout. Some items/info have moved.
  • Ability to search – called SmartSearch – within the video. You can search for words the speaker has said, words on screencasts or a in PowerPoint presentations, or even words written on a chalk or smart board.
  • A new recorder: you will need to install the latest recorder. Instructions are in Panopto.
  • The best part of this new integration: Faculty automatically get creator status. You don’t have to call IMG and ask to be added any more.
  • Do call IMG if you need to copy files from old Canvas folders so we can add your Canvas/Panopto credentials to that folder.
  • Students will use this same process to record to a drop box folder for your class, too.
  • Finally, please be careful when posting links directly to Panopto recordings. Students will have to go through the Panopto Recordings tool before the links will work. Please call for more information.

Don’t hesitate to contact IMG with any questions

Draft State Available in Canvas

May 5th, 2014 IMG Posted in Canvas Comments Off on Draft State Available in Canvas

A new feature called “Draft State” has been enabled in Canvas. It allows you to work on a page, a discussion post, a module, or a quiz before releasing it (publishing) to students.

Instructure has provided a comprehensive video overview of Draft State here: http://guides.instructure.com/s/2204/m/4210/l/201400-draft-state-overview-video

If you want to use Draft State in your course, you’ll need to enable it. Instructions for doing that are here: http://www.auburn.edu/img/canvas/help/teachers/f_enable_draft_state/index.html

Note: At one point in the future, this will be turned on by default.

Adding Department Heads/Chairs to Canvas Courses

April 28th, 2014 IMG Posted in Canvas Comments Off on Adding Department Heads/Chairs to Canvas Courses

Over the last few weeks, the Canvas Admins have been unable to fulfill faculty requests to add a department head, department chair, or dean to a class from previous semesters in Canvas for annual review purposes. This email provides an explanation and a recommendation to address this situation.

Explanation:

Canvas has two “conclude” dates that directly affect any enrollment:

  • The “soft conclude” date is the course end date, set by IMG when the term is set up in Canvas. For Spring 2014, the soft conclude date is May 6, 2014 at 7 pm. Before this date, the instructor of record can add the department head, etc. as a teacher so that person will have access for annual review next year.
  • The “hard conclude” date is the date Banner sets for the end of the term. For Spring 2014, the end of term/hard conclude date is July 30, 2014.
  • Between the “soft conclude” date and the “hard conclude” date: Only the Canvas Admins can enroll a department head, etc. in any class for that term. Contact IMG; we’ll be glad to help.
  • However, after the “hard conclude” date: No one can be enrolled in a class for that term.

Recommendation:

If faculty members anticipate a department head, department chair, or dean needing access to a Canvas course for annual review next year, the faculty member will want to add that person as a teacher during the current term. To add someone between the “soft conclude” date and the “hard conclude” date for the term, contact IMG.

Time Allowed for Quizzes Clarification

April 24th, 2014 IMG Posted in Canvas Comments Off on Time Allowed for Quizzes Clarification

We’ve had a few questions on how Canvas handles duration (or time allowed) for quizzes. Hopefully the following examples can clarify:

Let’s say you have a quiz set up with the following settings:
Quiz Duration (or Time Allowed): 30 minutes
Available From: 8:00 AM
Available Until: 9:00 AM

Now let’s look at three different students taking the same quiz.

Student 1:

Student begins quiz at 8:05 AM. At 8:35 AM, the quiz auto-submits as the time allowed for the quiz has expired.

Student 2:

Student begins quiz at 8:15 AM. At 8:25 AM, her computer crashes (or internet dies, power goes out, etc) and she’s logged out of Canvas. At 8:30 AM the student logs into Canvas again. She can resume the quiz where she left off, but the duration clock has not paused. This means she has 15 more minutes to finish the quiz, not 20 minutes.

Student 3:

Student begins quiz at 8:45 AM. Even though the duration clock is 30 minutes, the quiz ends at 9:00 AM and auto-submits the student’s work. Duration does not take precedence over Availability dates/times. When the Available Until date/time occurs, the quiz is auto-submitted.

Another note: Canvas auto-saves student responses. So if their computer crashes, they should be able to resume around the same place they left off. This auto-save includes essay type questions, but we don’t know how often essay questions are auto-saved.

Please let us know if you have any questions on setting up your quiz.

Summer/Fall Courses and Panopto Integrations

March 3rd, 2014 IMG Posted in Canvas, Panopto Comments Off on Summer/Fall Courses and Panopto Integrations

Some important information about Canvas:

  • Faculty now have access to Summer 2014 and Fall 2014 courses in Canvas.
  • If you do not see your courses, check with your schedule builder and be sure you are listed as the instructor of record.
  • Students will have access to Summer classes beginning May 2, 2014.
  • Students will have access to Fall classes beginning August 4, 2014.
  • Please remember you must publish your class for students to have access to class material in Canvas.
  • Please remember that copying course material does not copy Panopto integration/videos used in the previous class. Current students will not have access to the previous class’ videos. Information about copying videos to the new class are here: http://imgconnect.auburn.edu/?p=957
