Important information about the RealMedia (Helix) server

February 17th, 2014 IMG Posted in Outdated Comments Off on Important information about the RealMedia (Helix) server

The Helix server currently hosting RealMedia files will be taken off-line on May 15, 2014.

Many files and accounts on the server are quite old and are not used anymore, but some may still play an active role in teaching and learning at AU. We’d like to help you identify those files and arrange for them to be backed-up/copied/moved to a new system.

Please review the files that you have on the RealMedia server.  If you need help moving your existing files to a new environment, please e-mail IMG with the following information about your files by March 15, 2014:

  • Is the file type .rm (RealMedia) or some other file type?
  • Do you need help converting your .rm files to a more universal format?
  • Do you need storage on the new server or do you have an alternative location for these files?

For questions or comments, please contact Kathy McClelland in IMG at 844-5181 or img@auburn.edu.

Canvas Chat Tool Disabled

October 25th, 2012 IMG Posted in Outdated Comments Off on Canvas Chat Tool Disabled

From Instructure:

We’ve had several problems with our chat feature over the past few months. Chat in Canvas is powered by a third-party tool, but it’s our responsibility to make sure it works. We are sorry for the frustration these problems have caused for students and instructors lately. This isn’t acceptable, and we’re going to fix it.

We are actively seeking a new chat tool. We will re-deploy chat by the end of the year at the latest, but we plan to have good news for you much sooner.

For now, we are turning off the chat tool in Canvas. We think it’s better to remove the feature entirely and tell you why than to leave it in when we can’t vouch for its performance.

We suggest using Etherpad collaborations (which include a chat component) as a temporary stand-in while we’re working on a new chat tool. This isn’t a perfect solution, but it should be an adequate workaround for many situations.

Google Talk is a possible alternative (http://www.google.com/talk) and at Auburn, Adobe Connect is available. See this page for more information: http://www.auburn.edu/img/connect/policies.html .

Contact IMG if you have questions or concerns.

C2\Auburn

April 2nd, 2012 IMG Posted in Outdated Comments Off on C2\Auburn

C2/Auburn – the replacement for Open Blackboard – is now available to departments, units, and programs interested in using Canvas. Auburn has a limited-seat license for this instance of Canvas which is separate from the Banner instance of Canvas currently being used on campus.

Procedures for and use of C2/Auburn are a bit different from Open Blackboard:

Courses that run in C2 must be:

  • Directly related to University academic concerns and offerings,
  • Sponsored by a unit or individual employed by the University,
  • Approved by a department head or supervisor

Policies for C2:

  • No courses listed in the official University bulletin (for credit hours) will run in C2
  • 1 seat = 1 enrollment per course (i.e.: one student enrolled in 2 courses = 2 seats)
    • Units can purchase seats in 25-seat blocks, renewable every year (encouraged, but not required)
    • Units receive one additional seat for a teacher/admin role for each 25 seats purchased
  • Courses will be setup after funds for seats are billed. Units delinquent in paying for seats will have all student accounts suspended until payment is made.
