Chrome and Plugins

April 17th, 2015 IMG Posted in Java, Panopto Comments Off on Chrome and Plugins

Thanks to Rusty for the headsup:

As of Chrome 42, Chrome no longer supports NPAPI plugins. This means that Java, Silverlight,  QuickTime, and a bunch of other plugins that use NPAPI won’t work out of the box (amusingly enough, the Google Earth plugin is also an NPAPI plugin). By Chrome 45, NPAPI support will be completely dropped and there won’t be any way to run them (unless you install IE frame or some extension like that I guess?).

Google stated that they’ve been doing this because NPAPI is responsible for browser instability and security problems. The alternatives they’ve suggested for developers are to use PPAPI (Chrome’s own plugin API), NaCl (Chrome’s extension system), or HTML5.

In the meantime, if you go to chrome://flags/#enable-npapi and click Enable NPAPI, then click the Relaunch button at the bottom of the page, plugins will temporarily work.

NPAPI is scheduled to be completely dropped by the end of September.

You can read more about the decision here:

Panopto is moving to the cloud

March 17th, 2015 IMG Posted in Panopto Comments Off on Panopto is moving to the cloud

Currently, Panopto is hosted on servers here at  AU/OIT, but beginning next Monday, we will begin the process of copying all of Panopto to the Panopto cloud/hosted platform. Beginning Summer Semester 2015, all Panopto services will run in the hosted cloud platform. Here is the schedule for the move:

  • Week of March 23-27 – all content on the OIT Panopto servers will be copied to the Panopto hosted platform in the Amazon cloud. Users will NOT be affected in any way. You can still record, and all content will be viewable.
  • Week of May 11 – 15 – Several things will  happen:
    • All content not copied previously will be copied to the hosted site. That includes all material recorded between March and May.
    • The Canvas integration will be moved.
    • Recording to the current site will be turned off, but users will be able to record to the new site beginning May 12.
    • All content on the current site will still be viewable, but users will not be able to record to aces.panopto.auburn.edu.
    • Users WILL have to upgrade their recorder to use the new site (V. 4.8 for PCs, V. 4.7 for Macs).
    • Panopto will not be available on May 11, 2015, but users WILL be able to record off-line (then upload later).

This move is being done by Panopto at AU’s request. The engineer in charge of the move has accomplished this same task for other schools and is quite familiar with AU’s current site, including the Canvas integration. The move will change all integration settings necessary; faculty don’t need to worry about anything. Panopto, and the Canvas/Panopto integration will look and function just as it does now.

If you are at all worried about recordings being lost during the week of May 11 – 15: record offline. IMG can help you upload to the correct folder later.

If you have questions, please contact Dr. Kathy McClelland in IMG.

Panopto/Canvas Issues

January 27th, 2015 IMG Posted in Canvas Status, Panopto Comments Off on Panopto/Canvas Issues

Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the Canvas/Panopto connection issues. The problems have been resolved; the integration has been restored. We have also enabled the new widget that displays the Panopto folder contents within Canvas:

  • In Firefox, Chrome, and Safari: You will now see the contents of the class Panopto folder loading in the Canvas window. You will not need to open Panopto in a new tab.
  • You will be able to record from this new display; instructions are available here: http://auburn.edu/img/apps/panopto/
  • If you have created a drop box in your Panopto folder for students to record to: they will be able to record from the new display. Instructions for students are available here: http://auburn.edu/img/apps/canvas/students/index.html
  • Updating the Panopto Recorder on your machine is recommended but not mandatory.
  • If you need to copy content from old folders: You will need to log in to Panopto to do that – you can’t do it through this new display. If you don’t see the folder you need when you log in, contact IMG.

However, if you are using Internet Explorer: You will not see the new display of the folder contents in the Canvas window. You will still have to click to open Panopto in a new tab. This is a bug that Panopto knows about. Everything will work as it did.

Please don’t hesitate to contact IMG with any questions or problems.

We’re sorry to report that the connection between Canvas and Panopto is again down. I have contacted Panopto support.

For now: if you need to record a class, log into the Recorder directly and record to any folder. We’ll help you move files later.

Those of you who have recordings scheduled on remote recorders: you’re fine. That process is not affected.

I apologize for these outages; please know we are doing all we can to fix the problems.

The engineer has figured out the problem between Canvas and Panopto, but we need to consult with Instructure tomorrow to fix it.

In the meantime, we have restored the old version of the integration and you are free to record your classes using the Panopto link in Canvas now. But, it will look like the old integration: You’ll have to click to open Panopto in a new tab, no matter what browser you use.

If you have recorded classes to other folders in Panopto: please contact IMG tomorrow and we’ll help you move them.

Thank you for your patience; we will get the issue addressed so that we can use the new method of displaying the Panopto folder in Canvas.

Direct Links to Panopto Videos in Canvas

May 16th, 2014 IMG Posted in Canvas, Panopto Comments Off on Direct Links to Panopto Videos in Canvas

When clicking a link in Canvas to a specific video in Panopto:

Students MUST click the Panopto Recordings link and click through to the Panopto folder before any direct link to a specific video will work. If they do not: they will be asked to log in to Panopto.

Clicking the Panopto Recordings button and clicking through to Panopto passes the users’ credentials needed for access; clicking a direct link to a video does not.

Note: Links to public Panopto recordings are not affected as credentials aren’t required to view them.
