From Panopto:

On Saturday, June 10, Panopto customers will be upgraded to Panopto 5.4. This upgrade will require downtime: Auburn’s Panopto will be offline from 7:00pm to 11:00pm CDT.

During the time your site is offline, you will not be able to access recordings on your server, and any attempts to upload from clients will result in a “Server unable to connect” message.

Panopto Bug Alert: Panopto for Windows Silent Failure

April 12th, 2017 IMG Posted in Panopto Comments Off on Panopto Bug Alert: Panopto for Windows Silent Failure

From Panopto:

We wanted to let you know about a bug we’ve discovered in Panopto for Windows. Specifically, in all 5.2.1 builds of the Panopto for Windows client, we’ve discovered that USB webcams can occasionally send corrupted video data and a fault in our error handling can lead to the Panopto application silently crashing.

What is the impact?
Any 5.2.1 version of the Panopto for Windows client may experience a silent failure in recording with USB webcams.

Are users who upgraded to Panopto for Windows 5.3 affected?
No. Any users with a 5.3 version of the recorder is not affected.

How do I resolve this issue?
Download and install the current version (5.3.0.34848339) of Panopto for Windows. Follow these instructions for more details: https://support.panopto.com/articles/Documentation/installing-windows-recorder-1

Panopto Upgrade and Outage

December 9th, 2016 IMG Posted in Panopto Comments Off on Panopto Upgrade and Outage

Panopto will be unavailable Saturday the 17th from 6 PM to 10 PM for upgrades. This downtime introduces embedded quizzes and automatic captioning.

From Panopto:

On Saturday, December 17, we’re releasing an update to Panopto that introduces in-video quizzing, new editing features, and more:

  • Quizzing — Instructors can add multiple choice, multi-select, and true/false questions into any video using the Panopto editor. Viewers can take quizzes in the interactive player, and instructors can access real-time reports of all responses. This new feature will be off by default, can be previewed by admin users, and can be turned on for all users via a site setting.
  • Captions — Users can access Panopto’s machine-generated speech-to-text captions and modify them in the video editor. In addition, users can customize the color, size, and position of captions during playback.
  • Primary Video Switching — For multi-camera recordings, video creators can switch between primary video feeds using the Panopto editor. This eliminates the need for costly video-switching hardware, making it easy to create professional-looking multi-camera events.
  • Enhanced Editing — In June, we introduced the industry’s first HTML5-based video editor. Now, we’re adding the ability to upload custom thumbnails, and to upload and manage slides within the video timeline.

Panopto Issues

September 29th, 2015 IMG Posted in Panopto Comments Off on Panopto Issues

Panopto is currently experiencing problems and is unavailable. We’re waiting on an update from Panopto about the cause/duration of the outage.

Panopto is available again, though users will experience a lag in connecting when clicking the Panopto Recordings link in any Canvas course. Panopto continues to work on that problem.

Student Self-Help

June 2nd, 2015 IMG Posted in Canvas, Panopto, Training Comments Off on Student Self-Help

  1. Before delving into the issue, please contact your instructor. Sometimes something may not work in Canvas and it’s because the course/assignment/file/quiz isn’t published or it’s a broken link. There’s nothing we can do in these situations as your instructor will need to publish the item(s) or fix the link.
  2. If your instructor says everything is correct, then try basic computer maintenance, which fixes most issues. This is especially important if it works on another computer or no other students are having trouble.
    1. Update the computer. Windows or Mac
    2. Ensure both Flash (for Canvas) and Silverlight (for Panopto) is installed and up-to-date
    3. Try clearing the cache: Windows or Mac
    4. Try Firefox (Canvas in particular works best in Firefox)
  3. If you need help on how to do a task, please try the online student help:
    1. Auburn’s Canvas Help or General Canvas Support
      1. If the issue persists, file a help ticket directly through Canvas (Help > Report a Problem)
    2. Auburn’s Panopto Help or General Panopto Support
      1. If Panopto is requiring you to log in, then you’re not accessing Panopto through Canvas or are using a unsupported browser. Be sure to click “Panopto Recordings” within Canvas and to use Firefox.
  4. If none of the above helps, e-mail the information to IMG.

Please be sure to include the following:

    1. Your username as well as your instructor’s
    2. Course information (i.e., ENGL-1100-002)
    3. Computer information (browser, PC/Mac, wifi/wireless)
    4. Steps taken so far (cleared cache, updated browser, etc)
    5. Issue in detail (especially any error codes or screenshots, if possible)

Panopto move to the Cloud is complete – please read for important information

May 12th, 2015 IMG Posted in Canvas, Panopto Comments Off on Panopto move to the Cloud is complete – please read for important information

The Panopto engineers have completed the move to the Cloud. Everything will work as it did, but please read the following information and update any browser shortcuts:

  1. You’ll find Auburn’s instance of Panopto online at this address: https://auburn.hosted.panopto.com
    1. Please choose Auburn for the log on; you’ll be taken to the AUthenticate page. Log in with your AU Username and Password.
  2. Please Note: You MUST update the recorder before recording to auburn.hosted.panopto.com:
    1. Log in through the website or through Canvas, either one
    2. Click the green Create button
    3. Download & install the appropriate recorder. If you are not sure which version of the recorder you have, go ahead and download and install the Recorder from the Create button:
      Latest Recorder versions:
      PC – 4.8
      Mac – 4.7
  3. Canvas/Panopto integration has also been moved; everything that was in a Canvas/Panopto folder is still available.
    1. NOTE: Because only new content was migrated, individual  files that were moved from one folder to another between March 11 and May11 will not appear in the correct folder: You’ll have to move them again. The procedure is the same as it was.
  4. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE LATEST RECORDER AND WANT TO LOG IN TO THE PANOPTO RECORDER DIRECTLY (for non-Canvas/Panopto recordings):
    1. Change the server address to: auburn.hosted.panopto.com
    2. Click the Save button
    3. Click “Log in with Auburn” – you’ll see the AUthenticate page open in the Panopto box
    4. Use your Auburn Username and Password (NO: You do not have to add auburn anymore) to log in

Please call IMG with any problems or questions you may have: 844-5181.

Panopto is moving to the cloud. We started the migration in March; it will be completed next week.

May 6th, 2015 IMG Posted in Panopto Comments Off on Panopto is moving to the cloud. We started the migration in March; it will be completed next week.

Currently, Panopto is hosted on servers here at  AU/OIT, but beginning next Monday, we will begin the process of copying all of Panopto to the Panopto cloud/hosted platform. Beginning Summer Semester 2015, all Panopto services will run in the hosted cloud platform. Here is the schedule for the move:

  • Week of March 23-27 – all content on the OIT Panopto servers was copied to the Panopto hosted platform in the Amazon cloud.
  • Next week, Week of May 11 – 15 – Several things will  happen:
    • All content not copied previously will be copied to the hosted site. That includes all material recorded between March and May.
    • The Canvas integration will be moved.
    • Recording to the current site will be turned off, but users will be able to record to the new site beginning May 13.
    • All content on the current site will still be viewable, but users will not be able to record to aces.panopto.auburn.edu.
    • Users WILL have to upgrade their recorder to use the new site (V. 4.8 for PCs, V. 4.7 for Macs).
    • Panopto will not be available on May 11, 2015,  through May 13, 2015, but users WILL be able to record off-line (then upload later). Help on recording offline is available.
    • We will notify you as soon as Panopto is available.

This move is being done by Panopto at AU’s request. The engineer in charge of the move has accomplished this same task for other schools and is quite familiar with AU’s current site, including the Canvas integration. The move will change all integration settings necessary; faculty don’t need to worry about anything. Panopto, and the Canvas/Panopto integration will look and function just as it does now.

If you are at all worried about recordings being lost during the week of May 11 – 15: record offline. IMG can help you upload to the correct folder later.

If you have questions, please contact Dr. Kathy McClelland in IMG.
